Contributing to UTSA’s Bold Vision for AI Research
The MATRIX AI Consortium is proud to support UTSA’s bold, interdisciplinary approach to artificial intelligence. From advancing neuromorphic computing to applying AI in health, immersive technology, and disaster resilience, MATRIX brings together faculty, students, and community partners to create impactful solutions through collaboration.
Recent highlights include:
- Dual-Degree in Medicine and AI: Led by MATRIX’s founding director, Dr. Dhireesha Kudithipudi, this innovative program—launched by UT Health San Antonio and UTSA—is the first in the nation to combine a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) with a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. It equips future physicians with the knowledge to integrate AI into patient care, diagnostics, and clinical decision-making.
- Smarter, More Efficient Computing: MATRIX researchers are developing computing systems inspired by the human brain. These energy-efficient systems aim to power everyday devices, helping make technology faster, more sustainable, and more accessible.
- Improving Virtual Reality for Everyday Use: Drs. John Quarles, Kevin Desai, and Alberto Cordova are using AI to improve balance in real time, making at-home virtual reality experiences more stable and comfortable for people of all backgrounds.
- Supporting Disaster Recovery with AI: Drs. Ao Du and Jiannan Cai are creating tools that help cities quickly assess damage and prioritize infrastructure repairs after earthquakes. Their work supports faster recovery and improved resilience.
- Building a Stronger AI Workforce: As a key partner in the national NAIAD Institute, MATRIX supports students through immersive learning experiences and hands-on training, preparing the next generation of AI professionals.
- Exploring Safer, Smarter Transportation: Through ScooterLab, researchers are studying how AI can improve transportation systems and make everyday travel safer and more responsive to real-world needs.
These initiatives reflect MATRIX’s ongoing role in helping UTSA lead bold, meaningful research that improves lives and strengthens communities.
